TRANSPORTATION IN DR

There are many ways to get around the Dominican Republic. Some of the best options are:

Public transportation: there are multiple affordable options such as the Santo Domingo Subway (Metro Santo Domingo), that operates daily from 6:00 am to 10:30 pm. Also, you can find cars (carritos publicos) and buses (guaguas publicas), that travel specific routes and stop anywhere on the route as requested by passengers, with the downside of not being the most comfortable method of transportation as people tend to get crammed in both of these. Lastly, there are motorcycles (motoconchos) available as well, which basically are single-passenger rides that can transport you beyond the reach of the public car route.

Rental cars: you can either ask your carrier to help you rent a car before your arrival or rent a car in the airport once you arrive in the country.

Apps and taxis: there are 24-hour taxi services, mobile apps like UBER and other similar ones available. We would recommend Apolo Taxi as a reliable taxi service. The typical fares for a taxi start at RD$200 (approx. US$4), while fares for UBER and similar apps may vary depending on some factors including rush hour, distance, type of ride, etc. https://apolotaxi.com

Long distance local travel: there are three reliable private coach companies that connect you to different provinces in the island. These are Caribe Tours, which is present in almost the entire country (https://caribetours.com.do, Metro Tours, which exclusively connects you with Santo Domingo, Santiago, Puerto Plata and Sosua (https://www.metroserviciosturisticos.com); and Expreso Bávaro, which takes you to the Punta Cana area (https://www.expresobavaro.com).

Common Question: Is there transportation available from the airport to my destination? Unless you set up your pick up prior to your arrival or opt to rent a car, the transportation methods available in the airport are taxi services and mobile apps like UBER. Most of the drivers will have no problem taking you to your destination.

Common Question: Can I use public transportation in the entire country? Yes, you can use public transportation and get from one province to another. However, even if this is possible, it’s a bit tedious to achieve. If you are open to adventures, you could go for it. If you’re looking for a comfortable experience, we would recommend opting for a rental or private company.
